So, prom is on your mind and you’re clueless as to the whats, whys, or hows, but worry no more, Hotspur is here to help. Now whether or not you know the difference between Scott and Harry suits, or you can spot a double breasted waistcoat a mile off, we can all use a little helping hand every now and then. Hopefully this blog will give you the tips you need to stay sharp on prom night.
Firstly, colouring is key. If your colours don’t match then your suit is wasted, why spend the money if you won’t look good? So why not start with colour? Contrast is a solid starting point; black on white, white on black, brightly coloured and monochrome, it’s iconic and a great way to colour scheme your suit. When it comes to a good prom suit, a dark on light suit is usually the top choice, but why not give the opposite a go? A grey suit and black shirt can look very fashionable and it’s not overly common, so you can look individual whilst still being stylish as ever. Another good choice is highlighting certain parts. A black and white suit with bright and colourful tie or pocket square is a brilliant choice, it also helps you match with a partner a little better, should you need to.
Styling is another big point. It can be hard to choose between a sharper, tighter look or a more loose and softened style. The key is consistency and commitment, if you stick to your style it will turn out alot better. Usually a tighter suit in a darker colour, with a sharper style, will make you seem taller and slimmer, whereas a more loose, lighter look can work well for less slim gents. You should really focus on picking a suit to accentuate your strong points, rather than trying to force a look that doesn’t work. Thank god this thursday you can get some advice at the prom event, right?
Finally the most important part of any outfit; consistent themes. Much like a good book or movie, theme matters. If you have a mashup of colours and styles your suit might as well fall apart at the seams. Firstly, don’t match a light, soft style with a tight suit, you’re trying to look sharp and flashy, so avoid things like rounded collars and patchy brown colours. Secondly, use colours so draw attention, be like a brilliant peacock. If your colour compliment each other they’ll look spot on, especially if you drop in a bit of contrast.
If all of this went over your head don’t worry, the prom event on thursday is the place to be. But otherwise, what are your thoughts on what turns a 3 piece into a masterpiece? Let us know on our facebook or our instagram, and check out our range of prom ready suits online.
